Review: Serif’s PanoramaPlus X4

Posted by Gary Ramey on June 1st, 2011

Summary: In a word…fantastic! Creates correctly aligned panoramas from photos that stumped Hugin and Photoshop. PanoramaPlus X4 creates horizontal, vertical, and 360×180 degree panoramas.

Product Description:

PanoramaPlus X4 is the powerful yet easy-to-use photo stitching software that lets you create and share stunning panoramic pictures and virtual reality movies. With PanoramaPlus X4’s automated stitching process it’s possible to capture breathtaking landscapes in just three easy steps.

Review: PanoramaPlus X4 is dead simple to use. Load images, click Stitch, wait for a little while, and save the resulting panorama. If the images don’t stitch together properly, you can change the Feature Matching Sensitivity under File > Preferences. There aren’t any other controls to adjust how PanoramaPlus X4 aligns photos. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Hugin has the ability to add control points but is very frustrating to use because the program doesn’t do a very good job of aligning the images in the first place. PanoramaPlus X4 has created panoramas from almost all the photos that I have thrown at it including the panoramas that Hugin couldn’t stitch.

PanoramaPlus X4 also has the ability to save PDF and Quicktime VR files. The image below is a infrared panorama composed of ten photos. Click on the image and drag to the left and right to pan.
