Review: Manfrotto 055XPRO3 Tripod

Posted by Gary Ramey on April 8th, 2011

Summary: The Manfrotto 055CXPRO3 is a light but stable and heavy duty tripod. It is made out of carbon fiber and magnesium.

Manfrotto 055XPO3 TripodProduct Description: The tripod specifically designed for extreme outdoor assignments. The legs and the column are made of 100% carbon fiber combined with magnesium die-casting quick action lever locking collars. Each leg can be independently set at four different angle positions. This professional tripod provides great rigidity and lightness, combined with the best professional features such as the patented Q90° center column system. The magnesium top plate integrates a leveling bubble.

Review: This is a sturdy tripod. The Q90° center column system that can be laid horizontal works extremely well and is very stable. As a result of the center column system and the different angle positions for the legs, it is possible to lower this tripod almost to the ground for worm’s eye shots. It takes up a lot of floor space in this position but remains functionable.

On the other end of the spectrum, it is 55.5 inches tall with the legs fully extended and without raising the center column. With the center column fully raised, it is 69 inches tall. Measurements do not include a head on the tripod. The tripod has a hook to hang a heavy object in order to keep the tripod steady in high winds. It also has a loop for a strap. All parts are well constructed and feel solid.

If you want spiked feet, you will need to buy them separately. If you do a lot of landscape photography, they are worth getting.
